Presbyterian Church of the Covenant

History

The idea for this church began in 1964 when the Presbytery of Denver purchased 10 acres of land in the Denver Tech Center area on South Yosemite Street.  The first worship service was held at Cherry Creek High School on November 26, 1972.

The church received its charter the next year on Reformation Sunday, taking the name Presbyterian Church of the Covenant.  The first building which is now the Fellowship Hall and also housed the church offices was completed in 1978.

A new building program culminated in 1989 with the dedication of what is now our sanctuary and the downstairs preschool rooms.

In 1999 we began a campaign to add our new Educational Wing and remodel the rest of the building.  After much faith and prayer our building was completed in 2002.

A Columbarium, where ashes may be interred was built during our recent Christian Education extension.  It adorns the south side of the church by the Sanctuary.

We continue to ask God's blessing on our work here at PCOC.

The name "covenant" derives from the Old and New Testaments where God's special relationship with the people of Israel and with the new Christian community is described as a covenant.  A representation in relief sculpture of three symbols of the Covenant - the rainbow, the flame, and the tablets - can be found on the north wall in the Fellowship Hall.

Symbols of the old and new covenants are also found in the Star of David within the stained glass at the front of the sanctuary.
